Earlier this month, we ended our school-wide reading of The Wild Robot with a virtual visit with Peter Brown! Peter Brown talked to students about how he became a writer, his writing process, and share illustrations They had the chance to draw together before asking questions!

We recently had our 2nd Annual Balloon Parade inspired by Balloons Over Broadway & the Macy's parade. This year's theme centered around The Wild Robot. Students planned & crafted their floats with Ms. Fines during art class before sharing with the whole school!

3rd grade students recently visited the Science Museum, where they learned about animal adaptations and food chains. They pretended to be penguins, jaguars, and spider monkeys and saw a demonstration with a turtle & snake. They even had time to explore simple machines!

Last week, we honored Veterans in our community with an assembly at Glen Lea. Students heard brief comments from several veterans about their service and advice for the future. Prior to that, first grade students wrote letters to thank veterans for their service to our country.

We love the Henrico library! Our second group of 1st graders recently toured the Fairfield Library, learning about what books and activities are available before engaging in story and play time together. We are so grateful for such a great community resource nearby.

Kindergarten students have been hard at work, continuing to strengthen their knowledge of patterns. Students worked together to label colored patterns on the board. Being able to recognize, create, and extend patterns will build success for years to come.

Tonight! 11/16 at 5:30 -- come see Roz, build a robot, create shelters, and have fun as we celebrate our school finishing our first community read, The Wild Robot! We are so excited to talk to Peter Brown today & watch our 2nd graders show off their Wild Robot balloon parade!

THIS WEEK! On Thursday, 11/16, Glen Lea families are invited to join us as to celebrate finishing The Wild Robot, our school wide read-along from this Fall. Families and students will get the chance to build, laugh, and eat together while learning more about literacy for home.

Last week, the Glen Lea Lions took first place in the basketball tournament against 5 other elementary schools in the region! They won every one of their games by playing great defense and working together as a team. Our cheerleaders were right there, firing up the team & crowd.

Our Glen Lea students competed in a local elementary school soccer tournament on Saturday night, leaving their heart on the field. They are already asking when they will be able to play again! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our lions.

Last week, Glen Lea competed in the county's KEVA competition. Our 5th grade team placed 3rd in the team challenge! Our 2nd & 3rd grade teams came close, losing by a single plank in the build-off. We are SO proud of every single KEVA team member for their creativity & hard work!

On 11/29, Glen Lea will host Jaimal Yogis for an IN PERSON author visit! He will speak about storytelling, writing, & his City of Dragons graphic novels. Students can purchase their own signed book through our partnership with bbgb at https://www.bbgbbooks.com/glen-lea-elementary

Trunk or Treat is one of our favorite events of the year! We loved seeing everyone's creative costumes, posing in the Barbie box, and playing games together. Thank you ALL for helping to make this event & our book fair both a success. We couldn't do it without you!

In October, students enjoyed a show by the Richmond Ballet in our very own Glen Lea auditorium. As you can see by their smiles and dancing along, it was a show to remember! We are so grateful for all the chances to celebrate the arts here at GLES.

We reinforce students for displaying Responsible, Organized, Achievement, & Respect behaviors with ROAR points. We celebrate students who displayed ROAR with fun events monthly. One option in October was a "glitter glam party" -- and you can see these Lions had a lot of fun!

We love to learn outside of the school walls, like our preschoolers did at the pumpkin patch! They enjoyed a hayride, hunted for pumpkins, and found a super large pumpkin in the field. Preschoolers build size, color, and shape concepts all while celebrating Fall together.

Last week, 2nd graders explored VA's history through a field trip to Henricus Park, where they learned about tools, clothing, and shelter from the past. When students returned to school, we heard many of them share about the arrows, animal skins, and tools they had explored!

Tomorrow night -- Thursday, October 26 -- is Trunk-or-Treat here at Glen Lea Elementary School. Come out for candy, music, and the petting zoo! The book fair will also be open for CC, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and cash purchases. This is one of our favorite events of the year!

These first graders were so proud of the American eagles that they created as part of their study of symbols. Each eagle was as unique as the Glen Lea student who created it! They loved showing off their finished product as their eagles "flew" through the sky.

Yesterday, Glen Lea student athletes had the opportunity to participate in basketball skills practice with the VUU Women's Basketball team. They worked hard as they practiced their agility through dribbling, passing, and shooting drills. We love cheering on our athletes!
